Question on Payouts

I want to get input from the teams. How would you like a prize pool divided up.

More money for each individual category, or pay some money towards the Overall winners. Meaning pay some money to 3rd overall,4th overall...

Of course I want both, but geting paid for coming in 3rd-5th overall is nice. Some of the Iowa comps the top 3 overall.

I never understood why most comps only payout and give trophies for top 2 overall when they pay out for top 5 or even top 10 for each catagory. I'd like to see KCBS standardize and payout winnings to top 5 in each catagory and top 5 overall. For example, a ribbon and $20 check for 9th in chicken seems like a waste to me.

I agree with Wayne and Ron, I would much rather see payouts to the top 5 overall and payouts maybe to 2nd or 3rd in Individual categories. Of course, this is totally dependent on the amount of prize money. I still, however, think it's better to pay/recognize the top 5 overall than it is to recognize lower place category finishes.

Anyway, yes if any comp has over 50 teams I think paying out further down the line on the overall is a good thing. But again there are many comps in this country(Missouri and Kansas specifically) that have a ton of teams and little prize money. So yes size of the prize pool and teams as a ratio matter.

I do feel that payouts to top 5 in each catagory and overall would be nice. But do keep in mind that if you take away from paying out in a catagory just to pay out more in the overall, there are more teams that may get one good call and not even finish in the top 5. It happens every weekend.

I like the idea of paying more to the overall teams, but your payout distribution will be to less teams which means not as many happy folks for the organizer. We have all been there with that first top ten ribbon and how excited we were. I would like to see money distribution farther down even if it is a small amount which would benefit the new teams.

I agree with the above, the farther down you pay, even if its a small amount makes someone happy and wanting to come back for more. Besides, in most comps, the GC and RGC place high in each category standing, I know, not all the time, but most, so they get those winnings too.

Good point - that is how most of us got hooked on this insanity More happy people, versus fewer happier, but higher winning people is probably a good thing. We got 3 - third overalls, 2 - fourth overalls and 2 - fifth overalls last year and didn't "win" anything for them - they usually don't even call top 5 (altho we did good on catagories). That might be clouding my judgement at the moment

KCBS requires a contest to pay out to at least 5 places in each category so that has to happen. I guess I didnt word it clearly (and I am doing this for the benefit of Birch Run) we would not "take" money away from any of the categories we would just pay out Top 3 or 5 overall...

My own personal opinion is I would rather see more money given to the Top 5 or so overall, then you are rewarding them for a good cook overall, as opposed to someone getting lucky in chicken one time... Just my own opinion... The data will be presented as it turns out...
