I believe the Texas area cooking assoc. have a no garnish rule, along with a sauce rule. Sauce HAS to be cooked on.! No runny, no dippy, just cooked on.

The only garnish you get is a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom of the box, so that the meat doesn't slide around.

A note though; their judges are not certified, but are culled from the masses.

You make it through them, then you go to the one and only Master Judge.

And that's what KCBS should do. No greens, or any extra "stuff". You should be judging meat only! Sauced, or not!!!!!!!!

And I say many KCBS judges judge the garnish that's in the box even though they aren't supposed to!!!!!!!!! Most may not mean to, but subconsciously I bet they do. Thats why there should be no garnish, just a piece of foil so the meat wont slip around.

Then dont put garnish in the box... That is what we have been trying to tell you, it is optional, take that factor away from the Judge...

I do believe that could be a marked box. How many KCBS dont put garnish in. Not many, if any I would safely say.

So, I turn in a box with no garnish. The only box without garnish. I tell a friend who's judging. Easily distinguishable from the other boxes? Yes. Would that be considered then, "a marked box"

No it would not be considered a marked box - Garnish is optional... Look the KCBS or any sanctioning body cannot create a rule for every contingency, otherwise we would suffer from paralysis from analysis. They have created a set of rules that for all of their shortcomings they seem to be the best (that I have experienced).

I believe they offer the flexibility to not garnish or to not sauce, that is the cooks choice.

Garnish is not going away. As I stated earlier, look at a box with a nice garnish box (like most on here will create) and then look at a box without. The box with garnish will look a lot better than the non-garnish box.

The KCBS has taken this into consideration there is a reason that Taste and Tenderness have a higher weighted score than appearance...

So your saying the judges are taking the garnish into account, and not judging the meat, and meat only?

I'm very well aware its not going away. And yes, KCBS did make it optional to have, or have not. But still, is a box without, "marked". It would be very distinguishable from all others.

Just another argument.

I did not say they were judging on garnish, they are judging on appearance.
