Default Garnish

Here's a question for all CBJ's.

"How do you score the garnish in a box"? A lot or some? Does it matter if the garnish isnt fresh, or yellowed?

Just wondering what everybody's perspective is (there's a reason for this madness).

Geoff,
Dang it, its a MEAT contest not a garnish contest, the garnish is not scored.
Those are the rules, that is how the judges are supposed to judge.

Again, there is a reason to this madness.

Thanks for the comment Scott. Hopefully it will be read by inexperienced CBJs.

Default Garnish

Most of us, (include me) agree with scott. it's not a garnish contest. When I consider a box for appearance I'm looking at meat appearance. Maybe it's layout, consitance in size, color.. With that being said The garnish is nothing more then the wallpaper on which the art is placed.

I understand it is a meat competition but i think it would seriously take away from the appearance of your meat if it was on a bed of yellow parsley.

If that's all I had and couldnt get any fresh, I would consider not putting any in and just turn in the meat in a non-garnished box.

The only aspect of garnish that I consider is whether it is a legal garnish or not. According to my understanding of the rules that is the sum total of consideration for the garnish.

The first 3 words of rule 12 are: "Garnish is optional". That, and what Mike Lake stressed during my CBJ class, garnish is not to be judged. As Mike said to an individual, "You do not judge garnish, period. Unless it it deserves a one" (this was after a certain female kept asking different ? like "but what if", and "If it had iceburg",etc). Same person who asked if she had to judge pork while judging, cause she didnt like pork.

Now, what is better looking. Garnished or ungarnished. I do know not to judge a box down because of a lack of greens. But unconsciously, would we? I have never seen a box without greens when I have judged, so who knows.

Even though it is a PITA, I wouldn't want to get rid if it. The greens help hold the product where it is suppose to be, and I think it makes a nice looking box.
