If a judge is scoring everyone tough than theoretically everybody is being treated fairly. Maybe he pushes you down in brisket but he probably moved your score up in other categories buy scoring another team tough. I think it all balances out in the end.

Good food always wins!

Having never been through the TC class, I cannot really comment as to their qualifications, but as an experienced judge and pitmaster, if a TC tried to tell me to change my score, I would not only tell them to FO, but I would do my level best to have the contest rep throw their ass out of the tent (forever).

Default Cbj judging

I agree with everyone and respect all experienced opinions. I spent 10 years in the military and every year we went through an evaluation. This evaluation was based on a 1-10 scale score for multiple military level expectations strictly dependent on your area of expertise. What I experienced while i was in the U.S.A.F was the scale of evaluation lost it's true representation. It's not intentional. Everyone who cares or has a passion for their efforts regardless of the category wants a 10. As this expectation plays a role it tends to effect a scoring-----------if I don't receive a 10 I'm not great if I get an 8 I'm not good if I receive a 7 I am lower then average and considered a (sub-par level). As time passes in a field of evaluation where most expect "reasonable scores" we all seem to be disappointed with the 7's and the 6's. I know all the individuals that are members of the GLBBQA are very reasonable, intelligent, great and passionate competitors. I believe that there will always be a level of interpretation. It's not necessarily (right). We need judges we need dedicated judges. We need experienced judges.
I have worked very hard and have been given inconsistent scores multiple times. (how about 999/999/999/665 (I can justify these as inappropriate)
I accept this as pro athletes should with human error calls that officials make. Everyone I talk with at KCBS comps. Are awesome. We need judges. And I appreciate the "good apple" judges. Thanks

well, sir...I'd think you'd be considered as an 'experienced' judge... to help the noob.

Come on, think on it.... it's a good idea.

I agree Rich; to a point. The TCs are not the answer however. I am happy to help a new judge in a training environment (which is why I showed up to help as a TC at a recent CBJ class), but once you are in a contest environment, school is out (so to speak); if people aren't qualified at that point, then something is very wrong with the initial training.

I am not trying to provoke an argument here (for a change); it just concerns me that more and more is at at stake and KCBS hasn't materially advanced the accountability of the CBJs in terms of consistency.

Default Cbj

I am a KCBS CBJ. even been to a tbl capt class. (prefer the cooking side). Believe a great judge starts with understanding that which you are to judge. (not that this idea is original). I can say with great ease that I would be a very good judge only because I know and understand how how hard my BBQ BROTHERS AND SISTERS work to produce the best BBQ possible.
