I agree with Troy that the GC should get the largest percentage but paying anybody but first place is paying the "losers". How many of you guys would pay a $250 entry and the only chance of getting paid is if you win a category or GC? A few would but not enough for a comp to survive.
Organizers need a payout structure that is balanced so only the small percentage either way are complaining and keep the bulk of the teams happy. I think the Sam's Series is the future of competition bbq.

Catagory winning $ looks OK as suggested above. Overall winning split as follows: GC $3,000 RGC $1,500 3rd $750 4th $500 5th $250 6th $0 Ribbins and such for 6-10 is fine. Now if you had a $20,000 purse I may see it differently, for example: 1st in each category $1,000, 2nd - 5th the same as a $10K purse GC - $8,000, RGC $3,500, 3rd - 5th the same as $10K purse. You would adjust the $ as purses increased, but only pay top 5's. Top 5 out of 50/60 or 70 teams is pretty good - even if it is beginners "luck". You have to spread the winnings to keep people interested in paying entry fees and increasing the field of teams so we can have BIGGER OVERALL PURSES ![]() My $0.02

My opinion probably doesn't mean much as we cannot be there - but we sure do miss everyone!

It's time once again for "My 2 Cents".............
I think the majority of those that have posted on this thread agree that the Champ should get the money!! First off, a $10k purse doesn't come along very often in the State of Michigan. So, for that we all must be thankful!!! ![]() I think you will get a great turn out because of that, but what will help increase that is the payout schedule. I agree with the catagory payouts, but for the overall, if we have a high GC payout I think it will get more people from outside our State lines. My offering: GC $3400 RGC $1500 3rd $500 4th $350 5th $250 Again, let's not loose sight of what is being offered here, THE LARGEST PAYOUT OF ANY CONTEST(ok other than Sam's) IN THE STATE!!! Oh and this is a FIRST YEAR COMP!!! Peace Out................. Mark

Thanks Mark, that is exactly the kind of input the organizers want. I am helping them but the more data we have the better the decision can be.
Yes it is a first year event and we were looking to get even more prize money for this year but things happen... This year is a dress rehearsal for next year as it will be bigger and better and they will improve based on input from the teams. The Michigan Harley Owners Group has their annual meeting scheduled in Birch Run for 2013 on the same weekend as the contest so we are already thinking about how we can incorporate the 2!! This year first though.

Interesting discussion.
As a cook, for years one popular rule of thumb has been that a category win should at least return your entry fee. Paying top 5 overall, could impact that in some cases. Whether a cook nailed a category, or just landed on the right table I think they've earned a reward. There is something to be said for consistency as well, and if the organizer has the funds and the payout structure is reasonable I like paying a little deeper. With my KCBS hat on, but still speaking solely for myself and not KCBS or the board... We already require payment 5 places deep in each category. Requiring payment 5 places deep overall could put some contests in a bind. There are some things that I absolutely believe KCBS should require an organizer to provide, but at the same time I don't want to tie their hands to the point that we make putting on a contest more trouble than it's worth to them. I'm willing to look at it, but I'd have to be convinced that there wouldn't be adverse consequences looking at ALL of the contests KCBS sanctions. That number was in excess of 400 last year, and the differences across that field are dramatic in some cases. Thanks for the brain candy! |
