Ok I have a surface thermometer mod question?

if your not good welding or know anyone who can weld? How would you most likely attach a surface thermometer to the lid of your weber?

( It doesn't have the long rod probe unlike my other surface thermometer. )

I would use a probe thermometer and put the probe through a piece of wood and place it on the middle of the rack. Demonstrated below with the Maverick ET73

The only problem with those type of therm's Derek is that the smoke usually discolors the glass so bad they are almost unreadable after a few cooks.

Something like this.

Does it have to be a high priced one? Or just a descent one?

I wouldn't drill a hole in my new Kettle. The probes are easy to move around and are reliable.

Derek,
Go to ABC warehouse where you got the Weber, they have some cheap probe thermometers. I bought 2 for like $7.99 each, double check it when you get home by boiling water and putting the probe in, should read right around 212 degrees.
Don't go drilling any holes!

ScottThanks Scott!

Both of my surface probes actually do read 212*f when I did my electric thermometer, I did the other 2. ( I still got to show you the other surface probe )

Also the probe sensor will be right on the cooking grate so you will know the temp at that location, where the food is. Putting the thermometer in the lid will give you a different reading and will not be as useful. The dome temp can vary quite a bit from the cooking surface.

Thanks guys,

I will stay with the meter with a probe on it for the grate. and then use my electric thermo for the food, and then my soon to be pen thermo for quick reads.

I have that one and it does its job. I also have the Maverick ET73 which probably has better range than the ET7 but has one probe for the meat and one probe for the smoker temp which kind of stinks when you want two probes for the meat.

You will be happy.

For my understanding with this et7 1 probe will keep temp heat for the smoker and 1 for the meat correct or 2 for the meat

I just got two Maverick et-84's from WOOT.COM and they are very nice, but, they only go to 212 degrees then say "HI" instead of the temp. They will be great for using in the food being cooked, but not good for a grate temp probe if cooking over 212 degrees.
