Got an email from the folks at the Riverwalk Festival asking for some help with judges, the email is below:
Forgive me for taking advantage of your emails in a recent email that was
sent to all of us from Michael Terry.
I am in hopes that you may be able to help us find some more certified
judges for our 1st Pauly's Brew B-Q Throwdown. Our event is sanctioned and
will be held on July 11 & 12, in Lowell, Michigan (Sat & Sun). We currently
have 8 judges signed up. We will need 36 judges and 6 table judges based on
35 teams. So our number of judges could be less depending on how many teams
we get signed up.
I am wondering if you have a database of judges we can contact either by
snail mail or email. Any information would be very helpful at this point.
In the future, we would be happy to share our information with all of you as
well. None of our events have a conflict with dates. I have attached our
applications for both judges and teams. We look forward to hearing from
you.
Sincerely,
Liz Baker

If they're expecting to get 100% CBJ's good luck. I've never been to a contest yet that was 100%. Strange thing, Michigan has about 80 to 85 CBJ's and our contests still have trouble getting CBJ's . I realize that some of the judges are also comp cooks so that lowers the available numbers a bit. But what's the rest of the judges doing? Don't make no sense, take the class, get certified, but don't get involved. My sister volunteered to judge at Lowell, but got turned down because she's not a CBJ. Hope it don't turn out to be like the Mt. Morris contest last year. Not enough judges so they grabbed anyone they could and made them a judge. We also had seven entries to judge instead of the usual six.

Whose, judging,
Whose just going over to hang out?

Wer'e in. Talked with Liz Baker this morning, they are at 15 teams as of now with a few more apps on the way. They are still looking for Judges...they have 13 CB'Js signed up and need a few more.
Scott, I know your not a CBJ, but have tons of BBQ experience....if your planning on heading down anyway, why don't you give Liz a call and tell her you would like to judge. From a competetors standpoint, I'd much rather have folks like you judging then Joe Blow off the street.

Got an update, see the info below:
We currently have 17 judges, all but one are certified. We believe that we
will end up with 20 teams. Right this moment we have 15 teams, so I will
need to have at least 24 judges. So let me know if you want to. Then fill
out the application and fax back today if possible. Thanks much.

I think they need to get hot and make out their confirmed judges list. Some people may need some advance notice as to whether they made the cut or not. Accommodations, work schedule changes, and other personal commitments may need to be taken care of in order to attend this contest. It would be nice to have 100% CBJ's, but don't make others wait, hoping that's going to happen.

Ford got 2 calls as well as Larry & Sue (Pork of the North).
What a great set up and very well run for a first year event. I see this one getting pretty big next year.
Judging for the first time was fun, learned some good stuff.
I think getting that CBJ class as our winter project is a really good idea, will help all cookers learn what the judges are looking for and at.
Congrats to everyone who participated an it was good to see those who were there to judge.

Congrats again to the Scotsmen, and Extreme Roasters. Good showing by Ford and Pork of the North.
Great setting for a comp, looked to be well organized and ran. Should get bigger next year.
Great to be at the judges table, some great bbq, and some that needed a little tlc.
Sfisch great to see you again. Eatonhoog, nice to put a face to the name. Your sister seemed to enjoy the judging as well.
A special thanks to the Scotsmen for their post judging hospitality. Lindy was happy to meet you all, as this was her first appearance at a comp. I believe she may want to do this again.;)
