Just got off the phone with Dave Waun from the National BBQ for our Troops Organization.
They are requesting help from the GLBBQA membership to assist them with a cook in Battle Creek on June 19.
There will be in excess of 600 soldiers plus family totaling approximately1500 people, 250 of which are children who need to be fed between Noon and 1pm.
They have arrangements for (5) serving lines to move 300 people through each.
What they need:
The base will let bbq personnel on the night before, they will cook approx 1300 lbs of meat overnight on-site.
They need smokers. Right now they have (1) Lang 84 and a small Klose.
They will need some people to assist on the food service lines.
List your name and if you can bring a cooker and I will update Dave as information comes in.
Thanks
Scott

Jerry
I was kinda betting you would, sounds like it will be welcomed with open arms. How comparable is the cooking area in regards to a Lang 84?

Let me know all the details but I'll do it. I can hold aprox 12-14 pork butts in the main and I also have 4 20x20 racks in the vertical. Anything I can do for our military I'm in.

FYI - This is the same weekend as the Modern Hardware cook in GR.
I just accepted a position yesterday at a new company so I am not sure on my availability yet. I will let you know.

Shane,
since this is a military project, details are always sketchy at best. There will be an approved arrival time to be determined for Friday, participants will be allowed on the base and my understanding is locked in to cook all night. Specifics in regards to who will do what probably won't be figured out completely until the next morning by Dave Waun of the National BBQ for our Troops ORganization.

So we are supplying the meat or they are? I'm in for sure, so just let me know when this is all for sure and what I have to do. I think it's the perfect time to give back.

I would like to help, but I don't think I could bring my chargriller which wouldn't hold much product even if I could bring it. Count me in for the serving line. If help is needed on the overnight cook, let me know.
My daughter is in the Army Reserve.

We will not be supplying anything except for bodies and smokers. This is being put on by the National BBQ for our Troops Organization and we are assisting them.
Over the next couple of weeks we should have a good handle on the amount of equipment still needed but with Jerry's cooker I would think that 1 or 2 more Lang sized will suffice.
I will do a more formal "roll call" in a few weeks but thanks to everyone for volunteering.

So in regards to actual smokers, Jerry you will bring yours and Mark will you be bringing your Lang? Shane has his and Tom will bring his BWS. I think this should be enough cooking equipment.
I'll send Dave a email and let him know, I'll find out from him how many volunteers he has lined up and then you guys can decide on who wants to attend to help as a volunteer.
Thanks a bunch.

The meat and smokers will be provided so you just need to show up and keep the fires going.

Yes, this is a really great cause and even though it was so dang cold out last year we had a really good time, Mark's the one who was the real trooper, he sat in his truck all night manning the fires in the Lang's.
Dave Waun knows his stuff, he does this several times a year all over the place, you will be in good hands. Sorry I can't make the trip this year.
I'll email Dave today and bring him up to date and will keep you all posted on specifics as they become available.
Please remember that this is a military operation and they do not give out specific info to the last minute.

Add in Capt Dan and his Lang, hope we have enough. 1300 lbs of meat is a lot. Wished I still had The Gator, it could hold 48 pork butts on it's own.

Thats what about 130+ pork butts. According to the Lang website, you should be able to hold about 20 8lbers on a Lang 60 so between Mark and Dan thats 40 of them. Jerry's cooker can probably hold around 20 so thats 60. Shane's cooker looks bigger so even if he can hold 40 pork butts (???) so thats 100. Tom's party according to the Backwoods site can handle about 10 which he could probably squeeze a couple of more.
I can come down Friday evening after work but I only have the two drums which is about 12 - 16 pork butts max.
I am just reading the numbers off of the manufactures page so what will your cookers hold?
Shane Holz
05-13-2010, 12:55 PM
I have one 54 x 22 rack and 4 20x20 racks. All are capable to cook on. That's alot of pork but. I figure at least 12 on the main and at least that many in the vertical. I have lots of room.
Derek

if they are pork butt's I can smoke 3-4 of them at a time on my weber.

Let me know if help is needed Fri night and Saturday, or just Saturday.

It looks like I'll be going alone so if anyone could help keep the stick burner going all night that would be great. I'll try to do it alone but it makes for a scary drive home the next day.
