my boss has had the same smoker you speak of (New Braunfels Black Diamond) for many years now. he is also a memeber of the GLBBQA. i will ask him about it when he gets here and get you some feed back. but just in my opinion, 100 for it is not bad at all if in good shape. not sure what they were new, but i can find out. he has had his for at least 10+ years as far as i can remember, and always outside and its still going. if i remember correctly the ok joe is way thicker steel and will do better holding temps, but if your around michigan that can be hard to come by used.

notes from the boss.....

I’m very happy with it, and it seems very well built – I think I paid around $170 for mine, new (with the propane charcoal starter option). I definitely feel it’s an easy smoker to use, and holds a steady temp anywhere in the 200-250 range well. I’ve only ever used lump & chunks in it – have never played around with briquettes. Only complaint I’ve ever had was size - when trying to do two briskets or several racks at once, I wish it was just a little bigger…

if you need anything more specific, let me know.

you may be able to get it down a few dollars. you couldt make your own for that price im sure. as far as i know, they dont even make that model anymore. may have been replaced by their "silver" smoker found at home depot, but that is a pc of crap, i had one. do a web search on NBBD or a HONDO as one model similar was called and you will get lots of info and mods to make it even better. if i personally were looking for that model and it was in good shape, knowing you cant get another, and living in michigan - i would probably buy it. i did the same as above with my lang 84D. found one for sale in michigan, bought it. didnt have a use for it at the time, or even a place to store it - but couldnt pass it up. paid for itself the first summer of pig roasts and bbq's!

Sounds like a deal. Where do you live Bbqkolman? I've been keeping an eye out for your piece of tube.

How big of a smoker do you want to build?

Oklahoma Joe sold out to New Branfuls/Charbroil. Joes brother started his own company and is building the mirror image. The 10 year old black diamond should be the correct vintage to be a very good cooker. If you don't want I will find room for it!!!
