View Full Version : Grew up on Q, new to this group

My name is Stew Ellis. I grew up in Southern Oklahoma in the 50's and 60's where the BBQ is very similar to Texas. Most every town had a BBQ and catfish joint. Moved away in 1974. No good Q in Charleston, SC. Moved to Grand Blanc in 1982. Since about 1980 I have gotten by with various vertical water smokers, but got tired of the greasy water mess. Smoky grilling also keeps me from going into full withdrawal, but.... Last Summer I got a Chargriller SP w/ SFB, but had little success in managing the temperature. This Winter I have been reading about mods and managed to get 2 6-hour burns last weekend with some temporary firebox baffles. Now I plan to get serious about producing good Q, but not sure whether I want to do comps. I will be posting separately asking Qns. about wood and about metal fab shops near me.
I hope to meet some of you at GLBBQ events even if I do not get serious about comps.

Welcome to the group.
I grew up in Grand Blanc, graduated from high school there in '75.
Mom still lives there. Where abouts you at? I live in Holly now.
