I am new to the area and wonder where everybody gets their fruitwood for a stickburner. I need to find a source for hickory, pecan, apple etc

Altho folks swear hickory's here in MI..I have yet to find any. A good source is local orchards- they trim/remove old trees regulary, often sold for firewood or chipped.
Also, don't forget about neighbors who may have trees in need of cleaning up, or removal.
I dunno if yer versed with a chain saw... but that will set you free...

Have chain saw and not afraid to use it....so far my neighbors have not even been over to the house to welcome us and it's been 4 months. I guess it is gonna be lonely around the Lang and I'll have to drink all the beer and bourbon myself.

Hey Bill, where are you located at ?? You can get Apple,Cherry and Hickory almost anywhere in Michigan (despite what Rich says :)) Pecan is another story... Craigslist is a good resource and there are some pretty good prices out there right now...

Bill,
got a sawmill on S. Holly Rd right behind my house. Been meaning to stop in there and see what they have and what they want to get rid of.
Will try and check this week and let you know.
FYI, we are having a get together in Frankenmuth on the 23rd. Would be a good opportunity to meet someone other than your neighbors !!
Check the Holiday Party link.

When I see one, I'll believe it! I know you and Bubba cut up a few somewhere... Hmm there's some big ole trees down Bloomfield way- on a road called Hickory Grove... you think? Maybe I should stop and look :p

By the looks of the photos, a couple of those trees are ready for the chain saw.
looks like the membership could have a smokin and sawin day.

Yep, I got a guy coming in to do some trimming, I am not going to cut the hickory... however, there are several Sugar Maples that will be cut and that is some fine smokin wood!!

I planted some northern pecan about 5 years ago. Any young fellas might be able to get a smoke or two out of them when I'm long gone, hehehe

Here is a link to Do It Best Hardware, they have several varieties of chunk wood; $8.29 for 10lbs with free shipping to a nearby store if you have one.
This is where I get my wood AND they have pecan.

Are you looking for sticks or chunks? Chunks available at Menards, home Depot. Try a local tree service, you maybe suprised that they have some already cut and seasoning.

Sticks - I tried a few local tree services but not very good customer service.
I found some on CL but I don't want to drive an hour for it.
I am sure I will find some soon.

Now is the pruning season in the orchard industry. (January-February) I have had good luck driving through the country spotting brush piles and asking to cut frire wood from thier scrap. A couple of times I was told that thier kids were selling firewood and I just bought the applewood from thier kids. If you have cut applewood you know about the thornes.
I have found that pecan shells that are sold as a ground mulch are pretty good for smoking. The wood is better of course. I also would like some as well. I have been thinking of trying to trade fruitwood for pecan. Anyway if you are going to get some I would be open to to talk money for a road trip.
