I've just filled on the Michigan.gov new small business section tonight for Smokee Dee's RealPit BBQ.

That's right, Smokee Dee's Real Pit BBQ is officially a BBQ catering business.

All the permits were downloaded, filled out, and ready to be taken to their proper places on the first of Feb.

Purchasing a Van as I type this to tow the Lang. and I am planing on keeping the catering gigs to a very minimum specially with a small lang.

It's a go? It sounds like you just "filled" something and haven't submitted a lot of stuff.

Maybe this has been covered, but I'm confused. Earlier you posted that you go back to work on Jan 25. That's next week. So you're going to compete with your employer?

Derek:

I am not being critical here; just curious. If your plan was to go into the BBQ catering business rather than just doing comps, why did you get a small pit rather than a large one?

I doubt that you'll see us at Eagle. It sounds like a great event, but it's 260+ miles each way, and at the predicted $4/gallon that's over $200 just for gas.

So I take it there's no job? I suppose that there's no woman, either?

Sorry on both accounts.

I hope the catering thing works out.

He say's if I can get a place down there he would be gladly to take me back as a head chef same salary and every thing. Just not BBQ.

News on the woman, No We're still a couple, and shes going to help me this summer with cooking and such.

And on the permits? No There is a new section up at Michigan.gov where you can E file most everything now. And then pay in person, So that's what I did.

And my DBA is good for 5 years.

Nope, and please don't ask me why Geoff,

I could care less Derek. Just wondering why you said you dont what to work at a fast food joint if you posted about going to work again at Real BBQ. That's all. You seemed very excited about working at a bbq restaurant.

It could be worse. You could be saying "Welcome to Walmart" :D

(No offense to anyone in the group who may actually be employed at Walmart)

From my perspective, it seems that you are jumping into something over your head. You've been cooking BBQ for less than two years, and, frankly, have struggled producing consistent product. Obviously I can't speak for the quality since I haven't tasted any of your food except for a rib at Silver Lake in 2010.

I also don't know the environment in your area, but have you researched the competition, tasted their food, interviewed their customers, etc. to see if there is a need for another BBQ caterer, and what you can offer that would be unique? Have you done any tastings OUTSIDE of your family and friends to see what the public thinks of your food? Do you have a business plan and have you had it reviewed by anyone in the business? What's your total available market (TAM) and what percentage of it can you realistically capture?

Besides the DBA, how are you going to meet the requirements for the STFU (food safety, food prep and storage, etc.). Have you been through any food safety classes?

Before you put money into licenses, permits, vans and other equipment you really should do your due diligence to see if it even makes sense.

But what do I know. I'm just a competition cook and telepresence solution architect.

Good advice Ron. And as Confucius once said, "The cart rarely moves when placed in front of the horse.":)
