Good Afternoon all,

First off let me apologize for being tardy with this. I have no excuse so please feel free to ridicule and make fun of me even more so than you currently do.

We are supposed to open the nominations in September and close them Dec 31st. Well we did not, there was no reason, just life got in the way.

So with that being said, the nomination period is now open until February 15th at Midnight eastern time.
There is one position open on the BOD, my position. Please keep in mind that our position on the BOD are re-configured every year by the new BOD, so whoever is nominated is not necessarily running for President at this time, but you may get appointed to President!!

If you would like to nominate someone or yourself please send an e-mail to info@glbbqa.com (that goes to the enitre BOD). On February 16th we will validate that all of the nominees are members in good standing and will announce them. They will then have until March 31st to campaign. At the annual meeting we will vote for a new BOD position.

All nominees must be in good standing with the GLBBQA - meaning their dues are current. That is the only restriction (I mean heck Scott is on the BOD).

If you have any questions please feel free to post here or e-mail or call me or any member of the BOD.
I will update the website and the Facebook page and send an e-mail probably Friday.

Nominate away!!

Is it a secret who the nominees are?

Or are there just not any yet?

I have received 2 and one those was for a former member of the association. I have no problem saying who it is if it is OK with Mr. Terry, however, I don't think the nominee's know yet.

We need to confirm the nominees status before announcing and also if they accept the nomination...

Bruce - Do you know what the percentage of members to voters in the last election?

Bruce - Do you know what the percentage of members to voters in the last election?

I could speculate....The vote was held at the annual meeting at Soaring Eagle. From my recollection I would guess there were maybe 20 members there, maybe, I don't recall the exact number. There may have been less.

We currently have a total of 67 members (52 Ind., 10 Teams and 5 Business Corporate)

So using the number 20, that would mean that 29% of the membership voted.

I believe there were 15 votes cast and we had 79? members at that time.

19%

Have ya'll thought about having an "absentee" vote? If someone knows they cant make the annual meeting, why cant they vote absentee..... Once the list is out, and if you plan on voting that way, write the name on a piece of paper ( and sign it) and mail it in.

Just a thought.

It could also be done through the private messages for those not in attendance. A simple ballot with the names listed and a place to check off who you want to vote for.

I suppose I have no problem with absentee balloting, however, all absentee ballots would have to be in prior to the Annual Meeting, and brought to the Annual meeting unopened and then counted at the meeting, just like in any regular election that we all participate in.

My one objection, if I have one, would be, that the Annual meeting is something the Association puts together for members to come together and conduct the business of voting for members of the Board of Directors. We also try to have some presentations from Comp. organizers, raffle off some door prizes, talk about issues relating to the Association and generally try to have a good time talking BBQ.

Attendance at the Annual Meeting, by members has not been, let's say, overwhelming . And I know people have busy lives, and some even work, and Soaring Eagle is kind of a "hike" however, it is something that is for the benefit of the membership and when I hear grumblings of "what have you done for me lately" it kind of "frustrates" me. Again, just my opinion, and not that of the Board. OK, off my soap box, I apologize.

I have enjoyed the last couple of years of listening to the organizers talk and just hearing what is coming in the near future and think the presentations are a great idea, but i highly doubt anyone comes just to cast a vote.

Everyone at last years meeting was involved with competitions either as an organizer, judge, or cook. Which usually equates to that is how they are going to vote. Maybe that is the new direction of the board, i don't know, it is just the way i see it.

From the About section of GLBBQA.com -
Founded in 2007 the Great Lakes Barbecue Association was formed to promote Barbecue, grilling and all forms of outdoor cooking, not only here in our home state of Michigan, but throughout the entire Great Lakes region. It is our goal to sponsor cooking seminars and other events where our members, their families, business partners and the public can get together to exchange ideas and information, share tips and recipes, or that secret ingredient.”

This statement says a lot more about bbq than just competitions.

I know its a hike for a lot of folks to attend the meetings. And some cant make it due to work, etc. But this way all members can participate, or have a say in GLBBQA.

I personally like the idea of a mail-in absentee ballot. Whoever receives the pm's, will have a good idea who will win. By using mail-ins, one would have to make somewhat of an effort to vote. Envelopes can then be opened in front of the membership during the voting and counted. (or however the voting goes).

($24 and counting)

Your right Rich it does and in the past 4 years we have either sponsored or co-sponsored, BBQ & grilling classes, chili cook-offs, a KCBS judging class, tried to assist communities and organizations with their rib burns, organized and participated in Senior Q's, and made donations to charitable organizations that the Board felt were in keeping with our organizational goals.

If you think the Board is not going in the right direction then you should tell us what direction you would like us to go. What is it you would like us to do that we aren't doing. If you have some ideas for events we could sponsor that are in the direction you feel we should go, by all means bring them to the Board.

Nearly every month the Board meets and the times and location of that Board meeting is published on the forum. Any member is welcome to attend or to submit in writing any thoughts and ideas they have that they would like to see the Board consider. So please let us know what's on your mind and what we can do to further our mission.

I never said anything in regard to me not thinking the board is going in the right direction, and you are right if i did i would send you all a message and tell you about it. :D

My point above in the context of this thread are my opinion on the annual meeting and voting process. All that stuff about what the board has done in the last 4 years is usually ironed out in the voting process.

I'm sorry Rich if I misinterpreted your message, but when you start mentioning "the new direction of the Board" and then the quote from the About section, I read that as you thinking we are getting off track, and you weren't happy. If I was wrong, please accept my apology.

Just for the record, Dick and I are in Northern Michigan right now (on the west side of the state) working on an opportunity that will greatly enhance the GLBBQA. We are doing this on our weekends off and spending our own money. There are lots of things that go on behind the scenes that go un-noticed. We do this because we are passionate about our hobby.

I can disclose any details until everything is finalized but I just wanted to throw that into this discussion.

I will offer my .02 on absentee ballots at a later time...

How many meetings do the By-Laws require us to have Bubba? You were on the board at one time you should know this.

There are times that logistics prevent us from having monthly meetings or some board members can't attend.....just sayin'

I guess that the lack of minuets can be laid of on me, I am the current secretary. I assure you and the rest of the membership that I will post them in a more timely manner.

That being said I think that, as Bubba well knows, the board is in constant contact with one another through a host of different medias, phone-email-text-smoke signals-etc. As the board is comprised of many far flung enthusiasts we all try to do as much as possible to keep one another in the loop on our individual projects. We meet as necessary to insure we are all on the same page. I will also confess that there were at least 7 informal board meetings were I took no minutes, didn't have paper and pencil handy,:o You can always vote me out in 2013.

In Bruce's defense I can guarantee that if you actually attend the meetings they come quite frequently;)

I, like most, appreciate the time and effort put forth by you fellers on the board. Serving is not cheap, nor easy. I'm very happy the GLBBQA doesn't have the "drama" that the KCBS board elections have. This a well oiled machine that I have enjoyed being a small part of. My role is cooking, eating,BS and DRINKIN, and I try my best to hone those skills constantly.:D
Leaving the hard work to you all;)

It's ok Mike, I think they will still share their beer with you. :D

But you are correct it is a thankless job that takes passionate people to do well. I just wish we could get more members involved to make the board's job easier.

The nomination period has ended. We had 3 nominations and they broke down this way:

1 - Nominee was not a member in good standing so is not eligible to be nominated

2- Nominee declined to accept the nomination

3 - Nominee accepted the nomination - This nominee is Michael Terry
