So, I am new to the Forum and new to Smoking......
I just recently upgraded from a Little Chief electric smoker to a Lang 60 Deluxe with Char Grill.
I know, I am jumping right in.... without a lifejacket! let's hope I am a good swimmer....
I picked up the Lang for a deal, and it looks great sitting in the driveway....and of course it lives in the garage when it is not chewing away at the wood pile.
I am a transplant from Texas/New Mexico and have been around smokers since a young age. My uncle had a BBQ team in Pecos Texas and I have been kicking around the idea of starting up a Michigan chapter of his team.
I feel like using the smoker and putting great tasting smoked foods on the table is in my blood.
I am looking forward to meeting a few local guys and gals at an event or competition.
Back to the woods to chop more wood....
When is the next meet or competition?

Welcome aboard,
you have a fine piece of smoking equipment in the Lang. Several Lang owners in the assn and on the site that I am sure will help you with any questions, but rest assured, you will need to have a big supply of wood!
The next and last KCBS contest in Michigan is next weekend in Silver Lake.

This weekend is coming quick and I only have Saturday off...probably wont make it to cook but I may be able to swing up for the day.

Welcome Aboard GunTruck, I did the exact same thing as you are planning on doing.
Silver Lake BBQ comp should be a good comp to start with.
You will enjoy meeting and greeting fellow GLBBQA members, They are all descent chaps.

There is a backyard event there on Friday 9/9 that many pro teams have started with. You cook ribs and wings. The website is listed in the competition section under the silver lake roll call. It is a good time.
If you have any questions about it feel free to ask.

Ahh..the Little Chief Electric smoker. I cut my teeth on one of those back in the 70's. Had to save the box in came in for insulation. That thing did the the job, however small, and kept you busy. Welcome to the forum..a place to laugh and learn

Spares cut down to a St. Louis style cut and chicken thighs are the most forgiving, would be a good place for you to start in the backyard division.

Ahhhh I have so much to learn....Gun Truck, Here is my normal run down how I smoke at the comps.
The 4 catagory meats.
1 Brisket.
1 to 2 Pork Butt.
3 Racks of Spares trimmed down to St Louis Style rib.
12-16 Chicken thighs.
That's pretty much the run down.

Howdy, from one Texan to another! Gonna love the Lang. We use one and took 3rd overall last year at Silver Lake. As everyone stated, S.L. is a great event!
